Green Island - Rottnest Island snorkelling
Green Island is a small, flat rock islet just off a sandy cove on Rottnest's south coast. The islet and the reef around it make a mix of rock, sand and weed that holds wrasses, scalyfin, King George whiting and other reef fish, along with the odd octopus, cuttlefish or western rock lobster.
It sits inside the Green Island Sanctuary Zone, a no-take area that also protects coast used by male Australian sea lions, so look but take nothing, and give any sea lion plenty of room. The outer edge of the cove is open to southerly swell, so choose a calm day.
- Experience level: Moderate
- Depth: 1-5 m
- Access: Island Explorer Stop 9 (Green Island); enter from the small beach in the cove and swim about 100-150 m out to the islet. Toilet block with a shower at the stop (RIA map); no shop or drinking water. Green Island Sanctuary Zone - no fishing. Australian sea lions use this coast, so keep clear of them. The seaward side of the islet takes southerly swell - stay in the cove unless it is calm.
