The Basin - Rottnest Island snorkelling
One of Rottnest's most iconic spots - a naturally hollowed-out reef pool with clear turquoise water, sheltered by an outer reef. It is a favourite with beginners and families, with good facilities and plenty of marine life close in.
The Basin is one of the island's best-known swimming and snorkelling spots. Its shallow reef and outer platform keep the water calm when the wind blows from the south-east, south or south-west, which makes it a gentle place to learn.
Seagrass and reef attract plenty of fish and crustaceans, along with patches of purple, pink and brown coral, all easy to see in shallow water. Shark sightings have occasionally closed The Basin, so obey any closure signs, and stay within your ability.
